Why 7 Nights Is the Sweet Spot for Kerala

Kerala rewards slow travellers. Seven nights gives you enough time to experience three very different faces of the state — the colonial heritage of Kochi, the misty highlands around Munnar and Thekkady, and the legendary backwaters of Alleppey. Rush it into 5 nights and you'll feel like you've only scratched the surface. Stretch to 10 and you can add Wayanad or Varkala.

This route is designed for first-timers — logistically smooth, covering the highlights without a punishing daily schedule. It works year-round, though October to March gives the best weather across all destinations.

Day 1–2: Kochi (Cochin)

Fly into Kochi (COK). Most international and domestic airlines serve Kochi well — it's the gateway to Kerala. Check into Fort Kochi, the heritage quarter across the water from the main city.

Day 1 highlights

• Chinese fishing nets — Be there at 5:30PM for the sunset pull. The sight of these 500-year-old cantilever nets silhouetted against an orange sky is one of India's great travel photographs.
• Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace) — Stunning Kerala murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana. ₹5 entry, open 10AM–5PM except Fridays.
• Kathakali show — Book tickets for the 6:30PM show at Kerala Kathakali Centre. Arrive 45 minutes early to watch the elaborate make-up ritual — as good as the dance itself.

Day 2 highlights

• Jew Town antique shopping — Synagogue Lane is lined with antique dealers selling old bronzes, spices, and Kashmiri carpets. Prices are negotiable.
• Fort Kochi by bicycle — Rent a cycle (₹100–150/day) and explore Princess Street, the Dutch cemetery, and St. Francis Church — India's oldest European church (1503).
• Backwater ferry — The government ferry from Fort Kochi to Vypeen Island costs ₹4 and takes 10 minutes. One of the world's great cheap experiences.

Day 3: Drive to Munnar

The 3.5-hour drive from Kochi to Munnar is one of South India's best road journeys. You climb from sea level to 1,600m, passing rubber plantations, pepper farms, and waterfalls before entering the endless green carpet of tea estates.

• Stop at Cheeyappara Waterfalls (on the Kochi–Munnar highway) for photos
• Arrive Munnar by early afternoon — check in and rest
• Afternoon: Tata Tea Museum — fascinating history of tea in the Western Ghats, with factory tour and tasting. ₹150 entry.
• Evening: Mattupetty Dam — serene reservoir surrounded by shola forests

Day 4: Thekkady (Periyar)

Thekkady sits 3 hours south of Munnar on winding mountain roads. The drive itself is beautiful — through cardamom estates, shola forests, and the occasional tea plantation.

• Periyar Lake boat safari (7AM slot is best) — 2-hour KTDC boat ride through the tiger reserve. Elephants visit the lakeshore regularly in early morning.
• Spice garden guided tour — Walk through cardamom, pepper, clove, vanilla, and coffee. A guide explains uses and prices. Many are free with a hotel package.
• Kalaripayattu show at Mudra Cultural Centre — Kerala's ancient martial art, performed nightly at 7PM.

Day 5–6: Alleppey Houseboat

Check out early from Thekkady and drive 3 hours to Alleppey (Alappuzha). You'll arrive at the houseboat jetty by noon for check-in.

The houseboat experience

A standard premium houseboat has an AC bedroom, an open dining deck, a sundeck on the roof, and a full-time crew of three (captain, cook, and helper). You'll glide through the backwaters of Vembanad Lake — past villages, paddy fields, toddy shops, and fishing boats — while the cook prepares freshly caught fish, prawns, and Kerala-style curries onboard.

• Afternoon: Sail through narrow Kuttanad canals — villages below sea level, women washing clothes at the ghats
• Sunset: Anchor in open lake — the silence is extraordinary
• Morning Day 6: Sunrise on the water, then checkout by 9AM

After houseboat checkout, explore Alleppey town: lighthouse, Revi Karuna art gallery, and the coir weaving village of Punnamada.

Day 7: Drive to Kovalam + Fly Home

Kovalam is 3 hours from Alleppey along the coastal highway. Check into your beach hotel by midday. Spend the afternoon at Lighthouse Beach — swimming, Ayurveda massage, and fresh seafood. Evening: sunset from the lighthouse, then dinner at a cliff-top restaurant.

Most visitors fly home from Trivandrum airport (TRV, 16km from Kovalam). International flights to UAE, Qatar, Oman, and UK are plentiful.
